Distributed Systems Engineer – Data Platform

The Data Platform team at Netflix is building a highly scalable data platform that enables the organization to store, process, and make decisions using data. The team owns the infrastructure and services that power data ingestion, storage, processing, and analytics at Netflix, and delivers high-quality, reliable, and trusted data to engineering teams, data scientists, and business stakeholders.

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate scalable, high-performance distributed systems for data ingestion, storage, processing, and analytics.
• Build and maintain services and pipelines that move large volumes of data reliably and efficiently across Netflix systems.
• Solve complex problems in data consistency, fault tolerance, scalability, and performance.
• Improve the reliability, observability, and operability of data platform services used across the company.
• Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, and product teams to deliver data solutions that support critical business decisions.
• Contribute to the long-term architecture and technical direction of the data platform.

What we are looking for

• Strong experience designing and building distributed systems and data-intensive applications.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems concepts, including consistency, partitioning, replication, and fault tolerance.
• Experience with large-scale data processing and streaming technologies.
• Proficiency in Java or Scala, and experience with systems such as Apache Flink, Kafka, Spark, or Iceberg.
• Experience operating production systems at scale and debugging complex distributed systems issues.
• A track record of delivering high-quality, reliable software in a collaborative engineering environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud infrastructure and containerized systems.
• Experience with data lakehouse architectures and open table formats.
• Experience improving performance and cost efficiency for large-scale data workloads.
